Republican state Rep. Bill Thomas and his Democratic challenger Robert Beedle sounded similar themes but differed on specifics during recent interviews. Thomas, 63, is a Haines fisherman and former lobbyist seeking a fourth term. Beedle, 52, is a Cordova fisherman and refrigerator mechanic who serves on the Cordova city council. Beedle said Thomas is too closely allied […]

Shot bear escapes near school
Haines Borough Police Chief Gary Lowe this week defended the actions of an officer who shot a brown bear near the Haines School early Monday morning that then escaped into the woods there. The bear became dangerously habituated to town, Lowe said. “We normally have pre-approval before an officer takes any action like that, and this particular bear […]
Assembly certifies Goodman election; Hess seeks legal advice on decision
Haines Borough Assembly candidate Karen Hess said she was consulting an attorney following a 4-2 assembly decision Tuesday to certify the election of former police chief Greg Goodman. Hess had 10 days to appeal the decision to Superior Court. Don’t surrender Lisa’s seniority
Seniority means a lot in the U.S. Senate. With losing Sen. Ted Stevens’ 40 years’ seniority in the senate, Alaska is losing millions of dollars every year. SEABA’s leaders lost credibility
By choosing to violate the conditions of the permit they signed, Scott Sundberg and Nick Trimble of SEABA lost their credibility. Their words and signatures can no longer be trusted. They demonstrated their disrespect not only for the law, but for the public process, the borough assembly, and the citizens who in good faith participated in that […]

He is running for the District 5 seat now held by Bill Thomas. We were fortunate to get to speak with him during his visits. We are impressed […]
