Approximately 100 acres were curbed in a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon, June 17 at mile 28, according to Gary Saupe, forester for the Division of Lands of the State Dept. of Natural Resources.
City fire equipment responded first to the fire call, and the fire was under control that night, Saupe said. It got hot again the following day. Saupe said at press time that it was controlled and was being patrolled daily.
The Dept. of Natural Resources used four of its personnel, six additional people were hired, a cat was hired, and a water tanker was borrowed from the Dept. of Highways, Saupe said. In addition, numerous volunteers helped. The fire at times threatened the home of the Pat Lowry family.
Cause of the fire is believed to be burning ground cover witch resulted from brush burning. The woods were extremely dry.
The Dept. of Natural Resources is not set up to fight fire, according to Haines Fire Chief Frank Wallace, and in cases such as this must contract others for fire fighting.
