Haines-Skagway Little League is under way. To date, the Haines Eagles and the Haines Heroes have met three times. The Eagles have won all three times by scores of 6-3, 26-8 and 10-7. All games have been exciting, with balls making funny hops over the grooves and ruts of the Oslund Playing Field. Plans to upgrade Oslund Park have been discussed, but the implementation of plans have not been accomplished as yet.
We are attempting to complete our schedule with Skagway. It looks as though we will be able to go to Skagway on the ferry every Tuesday and Thursday evening of June. Skagway will travel to Haines via private boats. Possibly both teams will be here on Saturday for a double header. The schedule requires each team to travel three times. Players will be expected to pay their own fare since the league is not in a position to do so. The cost will be two dollars for a round trip and each player will make three trips. This schedule will be more definite soon, but due to weather and ferry schedule will be flexible. A 12-man all star team of 11 and 12-year-old players will be selected to play with similar teams from Skagway and Whitehorse in Skagway on the fourth of July.
A tournament team of 14 players will be selected from the 24 Haines-Skagway all stars. The tournament will be held in Juneau, July 21 to 26. We still have hopes for a Farm League. We need more umpires and an official scorekeeper. Also, anyone having Little League uniforms please turn them in as our players are not all in uniform.
Many thanks t0 the WIBC and to the Emblem Club for their contributions to our Little League.
The Emblem Club contributes $25 each year and we do so appreciate their assist in perpetuation of this young people’s activity.
For the past two years, the WIBC, at their annual banquet, has auctioned off their flower centerpieces and the proceeds have gone to the Little League. This year, Little League realized $40 from sale of three centerpieces.
