The National Weather Service predicts a period of moderate to heavy rain for Klukwan and the Haines Borough beginning mid-week.
Two weather systems will be affect the region over the next few days, including one that is a remnant of a tropical storm system in the northern Pacific.
Yakutat is expected to bear the brunt of the rainfall, and is forecast to receive 5 to 6 inches in 48 hours. That precipitation is expected to push into the northern panhandle in some places starting late Tuesday and lasting through Thursday. Rain is expected in the southern panhandle starting Wednesday.
According to a weather warning, the agency predicts 2 to 5 inches of rain at lower elevations and up to 7 inches in the higher elevations in the panhandle.
The encroaching system is already dumping rain on Yakutat and Elfin Cove. According to forecasters, a gale force front will head into the eastern gulf and panhandle late Tuesday night, reaching gale force around Cape Suckling, north of Yakutat.
The agency warns that communities should prepare for potential river rises due to the higher levels of precipitation. “It is also important to note that with the last two weeks of abnormally dry weather, low river heights and dry ground conditions may make flooding more prominent.”
