Do you have a job in the Chilkat Valley? Haines High School counselor Kristen Brumfield wants to hear from you.

Brumfield is organizing a mid-January career fair in Haines and aims to showcase the breadth of work available to high school students after they graduate.

“Tradesmen and women, I want all of those people,” Brumfield said. “But I also really want artisans, small business owners, journalists, teachers, hairdressers, and massage therapists.”

It’s the third time the school has hosted a career fair, though the event was somewhat derailed by the pandemic. The latest focus on broadening the fields that are represented came due to feedback from students about the last one.

“The kids’ feedback has been that they want more than just Southeast jobs,” Brumfield said. “They want jobs they can do in other places.”

The particulars of the event, like who is going to be in which rooms and when, have not yet been figured out. For now, Brumfield said to plan to show up with a 5- to 15-minute presentation sometime between Jan. 20-23 and be prepared to answer at least 15 minutes of questions from students.

Anyone interested in presenting can call Kristen Brumfield to sign up at 907-766-6744 or email [email protected] by Jan.9.
