I have been a police officer, deputy sheriff and chief of police. During my 30-year career, 17 of which were here in Haines, I worked in three states for five different departments. I was a patrol officer, corporal, sergeant and chief of police in two separate jurisdictions.
I was a SWAT team member, served civil papers summons, and arrest warrants, did investigations from minor offenses to homicides.
Never during that time did I find it necessary to hide my identity. I served with pride and enforced the law fairly and evenly as an officer of the court.
It has recently become fashionable for our federal law enforcement officials to mask up and remove name tags and government affiliation identification. To me, this is concerning and terrifying and should be a concern to every citizen, even here in off-the-beaten- track Haines.
