Regarding the sad news that Ramona Holmes passed away, I’m keen to share a bit about her. Growing up out Lutak she was a big part of my life. It started with her babysitting me. We’d pal around when everyone else played bridge. At some point we became more than neighbors, we were family.

Ramona was lovely, joyful, kind and funny. She taught me how to make the best blueberry muffins and to soak the blueberries in salt water to get out the worms.

I struggled with math, so she tutored me between middle and high school. I learned the metric system because she said it would be more useful to know it.

She taught me how to parallel park. She taught me to use seaweed for mulch and tasty ways of preparing goosetongue.

She taught me how nettles can be eaten. She also taught me how to get rid of the sting from nettles.

I feel like my brain is full of knowledge Ramona shared. She’d make whatever task she was working on better than it was yesterday, and I aim to do the same.

She was quick to take a break when visitors came knocking and was an utter magician at whipping up snacks.

I’ll miss many things about her. Perhaps our front porch chats over homemade biscuits and cups of peach iced tea will be what I miss the most.
