Of the seven teams that competed in the Fourth of July volleyball tournament, the winning combination was a collection of everyone who showed up at the event without a team.
The Misfits, as named by organizer Gina Randles, was comprised of individuals who wanted to serve and spike and volley but were not part of an organized team.
The Erekson family team won second place at the double-elimination tournament held at the fairgrounds.
Teams were required to have at least three players but could have up to six players on the court at a time, Randles said.
There was no volleyball tournament in 2020, and the 2019 competition was held in a mud pit on First Avenue, which was not going to happen at the fairgrounds court, said Randles, who also runs the volleyball tournament at the Southeast Alaska State Fair.
