Community Waste Solutions has adjusted its landfill hours and the borough is asking people to avoid Beach Road for the next couple of weeks as heavy truck traffic will be hauling mud and debris from the road to the disposal site.
Truck traffic from Beach Road to Mud Bay Road to FAA Road is scheduled to start at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday, running until 4 p.m. most days but stopping at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Saturday to make it easier for residents to get to the landfill, the borough announced July 9.
For this week, Community Waste Solutions is asking residents to bring just household waste to the landfill, taking their recyclables to the drop-off center run by Haines Friends of Recycling on Small Tracts Road.
The company also is asking people not to bring any trash to the landfill on Thursday.
The borough estimates it will take to the end of the month to clear Beach Road of debris from last December’s landslide.
“Since construction may be affected by weather and other contingencies, the time frame is not fixed and we ask Haines residents to be flexible and understanding so that this cleanup may proceed as quickly as possible,” the borough said. “We also ask that Haines residents avoid the Beach Road area while cleanup is underway.”
The borough earlier this month awarded a $166,760 contract to Southeast Road Builders to clear almost 5,400 cubic yards of debris from the road, and then spread 720 cubic yards of aggregate for a new, temporary road surface, along with cleaning and flushing drainage culverts beneath the road.
