Recent grad offers drone services

Joseph Rossman is providing unmanned drone services including aerial photography and 3D and 2D mapping through his company Leading Edge UAV Services.

Rossman, who graduated from Haines High School last month, said his services are applicable to real estate, artwork and utility inspection. Rossman said he started his company because of his fascination with aviation.

Rossman is a Federal Aviation Administration certified commercial drone pilot. He said he wants to offer UAV services in whatever capacity people might find useful.

“I started this summer,” Rossman said. “It surprised me the way people wanted to use it, things that I never thought of like taking pictures of their artwork. If they can think of another purpose, I can likely do it.”

Rossman can be reached at (907)-314-0219. More information can be found on his website at leadingedgeUAV.com

Canal Marine to move into new building

The Canal Marine store and shop will soon be in a new facility on Front Street and the old building will be demolished to clear room for an expanded RV Park.

Project manager Greg Schlachter said the new 8,000 square-foot building will house not only Canal Marine but also office spaces and two apartment units. The building will be heated with a ground-source heat pump.

“Twelve to fifteen feet below that property is influenced by the intertidal area,” Schlachter said. “We constantly get a reflux of warmish water in the winter time. There is an acre of coils underground that will be utilized to heat the facility. We’re working on a solar install as well to assist with the energy demands.”

Roger Schnabel owns the 2.6 acre parcel on Front Street. Schlachter said once the new building is built and Canal Marine moves in, the old building will be torn down. The RV park will be expanded with new landscaping and the showers and laundry services will be upgraded.

Schlachter said he’s hoping the new building will be completed by fall.

“It’s going up quick,” Schlachter said.

Jimenez starts new contracting company

Carlos Jimenez started his own residential and commercial construction and remodeling company this year called Chilkat Custom Contractors.

Jimenez spent the past 13 years working as a foreman, superintendent and project engineer for Dawson Construction. He said he’s dreamed of starting his own contracting business for several years.

“Working for Dawson was a great opportunity. The mold that Dawson has for contracts and construction limits what I was able to do and required me to travel quite a bit,” Jimenez said. “Right now, I’m working more than I ever have but it’s my happy place. I’m at home with my family and I get to make my own decisions right from the get go.”

He currently has two workers on his crew but expects to have five within the month. He’s currently working on five residential and commercial jobs.

Jimenez can be contacted at carlos@chilkatcustomcontractors or at (907)-303-2633.
