Haines was hot this weekend, crushing heat records Aug. 5 and 6.
According to the National Weather Service, the Haines airport reached 88 degrees Saturday, breaking a heat record for the day of 86 degrees set in 1977. The Chilkat River Bridge measured 93 degrees and Haines Highway at Chilkat read 92.
Sunday’s temperatures beat a 2009 record by 10 degrees with an 89-degree high. Other Southeast communities like Juneau, Skagway and Hoonah also saw record temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to drop back into the high 50s this week with rain returning to the forecast.
