I am struck by the audacity of Eric Holle’s letter to the editor in which he pretends that the current push to reclassify the Chilkat River has nothing to do with the Palmer Project.

I have long ago concluded that these leftist greenies can’t possibly be stupid enough to believe their own rhetoric and that the primary motivation behind the environmental movement is a weapon against industry and property rights.

Granted, there have been terrible abuses by the mining industry in the past, but in this country now, miners are so heavily scrutinized that they have a vested interest in running as clean an operation as possible.

Resource extraction is an essential aspect of modern life and equally important to national prosperity. Greenies claim to care little for these two issues, but the mining industry will go on. (After all, it’s almost as lucrative as the environmental movement.)

Would you prefer the materials needed to build your computer or your car come from some other country that likely doesn’t have much stringent environmental regulation? Much better it happen here where we can keep an eye on it and benefit from it.

So what are you afraid of, Eric? A little prosperity for Haines? That you and your deep pockets full of outside money lose your death grip on this town?
