Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a state and national holiday. I am confused why our town does not recognize this holiday. Haines Borough offices and the school are open. I was curious as to other towns in Alaska that operated their governments and schools on MLK Day. I could not find another place, that includes Skagway, Juneau, Craig, Homer and Anchorage. Where and when did we miss this? I hope we can have a day, one that doesn’t require us to “go to work as usual,” and celebrate a man that gave his life to freedom and equality.
