Fourth-place finishes from sophomore Charlie Bower and junior Zane Durr led Haines High School at a Petersburg wrestling tournament Oct. 17-18.

Bower tallied a 4-2 record at 120 pounds and Durr went 3-2 in the 152-pound weight class.

The Glacier Bears placed 11th out of 15 teams at the event. Ketchikan, Kotzebue and Wrangell were the top three squads.

Junior Kai Hays (160 pounds) and senior Casey St. Clair (170 pounds) were the other Haines grapplers with multiple wins, each notching a 2-2 record.

Haines competed at the Brandon Pilot Invitational Wrestling Tournament the following weekend in Juneau, and several Glacier Bears saw improved results.

Records included freshman Cameron Merklin-Bauer and sophomore Ketch Jacobson, 3-2 at 120 pounds; sophomore Austin Davis, 3-2 at 145 pounds; St. Clair, 2-2; freshman Carl Tupou, 2-2 at 170 pounds; and junior Tyler Murphy, 3-2 at 182 pounds.

Bower went 1-1 before exiting the tournament due to illness, and sophomore Mori Hays (1-1 at 126 pounds) did not make weight for the second day of competition. Hays was injured for the Petersburg tournament. Durr and Kai Hays missed the invitational and instead participated in the Drama, Debate and Forensics meet in Haines that weekend.

“Losing them, for various reasons, hurt our team scores a bit,” said coach Dennis Durr.

Overall, Haines finished 13th out of 16 teams, one spot ahead of Juneau-Douglas. Ketchikan again was champion.

Coach Durr noted the Glacier Bears are bunched up at a few weight classes, and some might make moves in upcoming weeks.

“A few guys are real promising to get to state, but those weight classes are stacked,” he said.
