A 4.6-magnitude earthquake shook Haines Wednesday morning, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center.
The quake struck 31 miles west of Haines at about 7 a.m. and was four miles deep.
Haines Borough public facilities director Carlos Jimenez and harbormaster Phil Benner rushed out to check on the dilapidated Lutak Dock, which a PND Engineers draft report recently stated would have difficulty withstanding medium-intensity quakes.
“There is no visible change,” Jimenez said.
FAA Road resident Ronnie Bradley said the quake, which he guessed was a 5.3 or 5.4, woke him up. “You could definitely tell it was shaking the whole building. It’s a three-story building,” Bradley said.
Bradley, who works at Olerud’s Market Center, said nothing was amiss at the store when he went to work at 10 a.m. “Someone would have mentioned it if there was,” he said.
Another quake hit Wednesday at 2:55 p.m. about 27 miles west of Haines and registered a 3.9, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center.
