Second Saturday barn dances are back.
The dance series that launched last spring has resumed after an August hiatus.
“It’s a barn dance, not a square dance,” said dance caller Gene Kennedy. “There’s squares and circles and lines. Line dances are what they call contra dances elsewhere. Whatever dance we’re doing, we walk through the steps first.”
This month’s dance begins 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Haines ANB Hall. A requested $5 donation at the door goes toward hall rental.
Kennedy said dances are relaxed and open to all. “We get everybody from 8 or 10-year-olds on up, and there’s lots of pretty girls.”
The dance band – anchored by veteran musicians Len Feldman, Tom Heywood and Katya Kirsch – is open to all local musicians.
Organizer Diane Sly said that dances sometimes feature more than one caller.
