Haines High School will send more than a dozen runners to compete in a regional cross-country meet at Ketchikan on Saturday, Sept. 24.
“I really think we can get both teams to state, but it’s not a done deal yet,” said coach Liam Cassidy. “You’ve got to earn your way there.”
In separate boys’ and girls’ divisions, the top three teams and 15 individuals in 3A at the Ketchikan regional will advance to the Saturday, Oct. 1, state meet in Anchorage.
The Glacier Bears had a time trial last week to determine the lineup for the Ketchikan meet.
“It was really a big boost for the team to have more runners than we could take, because everyone just really took it seriously and was very thorough in training,” Cassidy said.
The boys’ team includes sophomores Chevy Fowler and Isaac Wing, juniors Brandon Bachman, Patrick Henderson and Corey Piper, and seniors Quinn Asquith-Heinz and Brandon Haxton.
Freshman Zayla Asquith-Heinz, sophomore Serena Badgley, junior Jess Giddings, and seniors Maggie Daly, Elena Horner, Marnie Rasmussen and Jackie St. Clair are set to run for the girls, with sophomore Isobel Smith and junior Tia Heywood as alternates.
Overall team scores will be based on the top five finishers from each squad.
