The Haines volleyball team visited Mount Edgecumbe last weekend and struggled with the Lady Braves’ attack.

“It was probably the best Edgecumbe team we’ve played against in the last four years,” said coach Judy Erekson.

Mount Edgecumbe swept the Haines varsity in two matches: 7-25, 16-25, 11-25; and 10-25, 11-25, 12-25.

“The second night, they kind of got it together and played more of their game,” Erekson said of her Glacier Bear squad. “They still lost, but they weren’t as disappointed with themselves.”

Junior Riley Erekson tallied several points on serve in the team’s 16-point game. Senior Teolani Lynch was out with a shoulder injury.

The Haines junior varsity didn’t seem intimidated by Mount Edgecumbe’s massive gym. Haines took the hosts to five games in the first match: 19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 8-15. Coach Erekson said a highlight was sophomore Libby Jacobson serving a dozen straight points.

The junior varsity fell by a larger margin in the second match: 9-25, 12-25, 25-27.

The Glacier Bears will face Petersburg at home this week. As of press time Wednesday, Erekson said game times were to be determined and might be moved up a day, due to the ferry schedule from Petersburg.
