The Haines Borough Assembly on Tuesday approved the hire of Brian Lemcke as director of public facilities.
Lemcke had filled the interim role since July, following the departure of Brad Maynard. He previously resided in Sequim, Wash.
Lemcke is a former city councilor who owns the Fogcutter Bar. He was a borough employee from 2006 to 2008 as project manager for the Haines School renovation and additional construction work, before the facilities director position was created.
Borough manager Mark Earnest said he interviewed three candidates, and he selected Lemcke due to his project management experience, “first-hand knowledge” of local government, and because “he understands the budget process and has had a tremendous rapport with staff.” Earnest said Lemcke’s salary will be $80,000.
When Lemcke started as the interim director, he told the Chilkat Valley News his plan was “just to kind of cover the projects that are going until they can get somebody, long-term.” Now he’s making a more permanent move to Haines.
“My wife came up and she was here about three weeks, and we talked it over extensively and decided there are worse places to be than in Haines,” Lemcke said. “I have been enjoying the job. It is interesting and challenging.”
