Police chief Gary Lowe this week said he expects two patrol officers to join the Haines Borough Police Department next month.
Whittier officer John Havard will start with the department at the beginning of July to replace Jason Joel, who resigned in April.
Joel had been a police sergeant, but his rank shifted to patrolman in February. Officer Cassandra McEwen then took on some of the responsibilities of the supervisory sergeant position in Haines.
The department has another opening as of early this month, following the resignation of officer Kevin Kennedy. Lowe said the hiring process is “in the works” and the second new officer also should start in July.
Lowe said McEwen and officer Simon Ford have been working overtime and standby hours while the department is short staffed.
