A large canoe brought up from Juneau as well as porpoises greeted the ceremonial launching of a longtail canoe May 6 at Chilkat State Park.

More than 100 people were on hand for the observance, which included a naming ceremony. The vessel, carved in Klukwan, was named “Heen Yakgaheiyagoo Yaakw,” meaning “Water Spirit Canoe.”

The name is derived from a Genesis Bible passage referring to the spirit of God moving on the face of the waters, said Lani Hotch. “That creative spirit is in this canoe, as well,” Hotch said.

Klukwan students serenaded the vessel with traditional songs. “Culture Days,” a two-day village celebration of Chilkat lifeways, including song and dance workshops, was held May 5-6.
