Registration is open for the annual Summer Youth Theater Conservatory, a three-week program that introduces youths to acting and culminates with the performance of a children’s play.

The program is about 20 years old and is sponsored by Lynn Canal Community Players.

LCCP secretary-treasurer Annette Smith said the program will be held July 1-25 and will present “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” on July 23-24.

“The students learn about acting, voice projection, movement, character development and stage combat,” Smith said. “They’re working with all aspects of a production, including set production and sound.”

The acting program is open to students ages eight through 18, daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m .; youths ages five through seven can participate in half-day “playmaking” sessions on the same days.

Director Elise Lammers, who directed last year’s conservatory production of “The Jungle Book,” will return as director this year, Smith said.

The acting program costs $250; playmaking is $175. A discount is available for early registration before June 8. Registration forms are available at the library and Babbling Book.

Smith said the program has graduated actors who are now prominent in school plays. “It’s a good, creative experience for everybody in the summertime,” she said.
