A 56-year-old Haines woman was charged with felony arson and transported to Lemon Creek jail following a blaze at an FAA Road house Tuesday that caused an estimated $20,000 in damage. A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21.
According to court documents, the woman told police she set fire to a bed in the bedroom of a man who owns the home because he was a (jerk). She told police the man had not hurt her.
She was found in a separate room in the house, “casually sipping” whiskey from a coffee cup, according to police. A test showed her blood-alcohol level to be .193.
In court Wednesday, the house owner said he felt “slightly terrorized” by the woman’s actions and that she was dangerous to him and possibly the community.
Acting magistrate Susan Reed said the nature of the crime was “severe” and “frightening” and set $10,000, cash-only bail.
A large pile of wood was found atop the bed. Fire damage was limited to the bedroom, but smoke and heat damage was throughout the house, according to fire officials. The house owner doused the fire with an extinguisher.
