The Haines School has added one night of basketball to its open gym schedule, but more gym hours for community use may have to wait for a joint meeting between Haines Borough and school officials.
Superintendent Michael Byer told the school board last week that the school’s Community Education program has added basketball in the elementary gym on Wednesday nights, but adding more hours – such as requested hours Sunday – would require additional funding.
Byer said Community Education is funded by the Haines Borough and some board members said the borough should provide funds for expanded gym time. “We have a lot of activities with a lot of students involved and they are our priority,” said board chair Carol Kelly.
Board member Sean Cone asked the administration to develop a cost estimate for expanding gym hours.
Resident Joe Parnell is seeking the return of Sunday open gym hours for adults, which were offered last year. The borough’s Community Youth Development program currently offers Sunday gym hours for youths.
