Big Al’s Salmon Shack opened a month ago on Old Haines Highway across from the convenience store. The trailer-side stand offers deep-fried halibut, salmon and French fries. All the fish is locally caught and processed, said co-owner Harry Rietze.

Rietze said he got the idea for deep-frying salmon from dad Hugh Rietze, who battered up some at the fishermen’s community picnic a couple years ago. “I thought, ‘Why not?’”

Harry said he bought a food trailer that operated last summer in Albany, Ore. “Haines had nothing like that, a fast fish and chips. So we decided to bring it up and see how it would do.”

The batter recipe that uses Panko bread crumbs is an original family recipe that people like, Rietze said. “We’ve had a good turnout and we’re starting to get steady customers.”

Halibut fish and chips is $12, salmon and chips is $8. Halibut and salmon sandwiches, baked or deep fried, are also available for $10 and $8 respectively. Other offerings include chicken strips ($7), hot dogs ($4) and pop ($1).

Rietze said he planned to offer a seafood chowder soon. There’s outside seating available at three tables.

Big Al’s is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Call 541-231-0740 to place advance orders.
