The Veterans Day dinner at the American Legion could not have happened if not for the many volunteers who turned out to help. A very special thanks to Chip and Tony Strong, who worked two days preparing the dinner. And what a dinner it was. Their spaghetti sauce was a work of culinary art. Thank […]

Eagle preserve council tepid on Chilkat River protection
A Chilkat Indian Village proposal to pursue top-level protections for the Chilkat River received a lukewarm response from the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Advisory Council this week. Tribal council president Jones Hotch Jr. asked the council to support a resolution requesting the river be designated as an Outstanding National Resource Water, which protects waters of exceptional […]
Heavy rains trigger slides, close highway
As surely as the sun will rise tomorrow, the slide zones near 19 Mile and 23 Mile Haines Highway will continue to dump debris on the landscape below, local Department of Transportation foreman Matt Boron said this week. That’s why he wasn’t surprised when yet another slide episode triggered by torrential rains blocked traffic last […]
Highway doesn’t need 55 mph standard
The Chilkat River/Haines Highway corridor is a destination, a place to go to, to spend time in, an attraction and asset to our community, not a place we need to coax folks to speed through at 55 mph. As long as the 55 mph standard is in place, we aren’t going to be doing this […]
Skull fragment unearthed at 7 Mile
Workers digging into some delivered soil at the American Bald Eagle Foundation this week at first thought they’d found a coconut shell. Then someone guessed it was a clay bowl. Foundation raptor curator Chloe Goodson joked that it might be a skull. That’s exactly what it turned out to be. Goodson, intern Maggie Hughes and raptor handler […]
Subsistence fishing extended through Oct. 11
Residents who haven’t gotten their subsistence fish can take a deep breath. Due to a late-season abundance of sockeye returning to Chilkat Lake, subsistence fishing has been extended through Oct. 11. Commercial fisheries biologist Randy Bachman said subsistence fishing typically ends by October, but this year’s strong return merits allowing fishermen more time to fill […]
King salmon escapement goal reached
A closure of subsistence and sport fishing in Lynn Canal last spring apparently had its desired effect. The Department of Fish and Game has met its escapement goal, as an estimated 2,300 large, spawning chinook are estimated to have returned to Chilkat River spawning grounds. The department seeks a goal of 1,850 to 3,600 spawners to sustain the run. […]
Hats off to Snowburners for clean-up
In support of Kathi Lapp and her recent letter, I want to praise the Snowburners for doing a clean-up of the riparian area at 25 Mile. Snowburners rule. Thank you. The Chilkat River and confluence with the Klehini River are something to respect for everyone. I hope to see a change in what we have seen as […]
Newcomer restoring noted painter’s stone house
A commercial real estate developer who moved to town last spring is restoring a stone-sided house on the Chilkat River, partly as a tribute to Gil Smith, a noted oil painter who lived there and built the structure nearly 70 years ago. “It’s warranted, because of who Gil was and because the masonry work and foundation […]
Membership qualifications cause Chamber rift
A decision at last week’s Haines Chamber of Commerce board meeting that prompted a prominent member to quit the group has resurrected questions of how the organization should determine qualifications for membership. Karen Hess withdrew her two memberships for Chilkat River Adventures and the Duck In Car Wash after the board voted 5-0 on Friday to accept […]
