Joe Poor has 120 apple trees looking for a good home. Poor, chair of the Haines Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Committee, wants that to be in Haines. Poor was at the Juneau Costco when he noticed employees hauling off some tired-looking trees. He asked some questions, found out they hadn’t been selling, and secured […]
Smith among last of the ‘liberators’
Former resident Norm Smith Sr. was among 120 World War II veterans honored recently during a Washington, D.C. ceremony for soldiers who helped liberate Nazi concentration camps 65 years ago. Smith, 84, is one of the youngest “liberators,” and by his account, lucky to be among them. As an 18-year-old paratrooper in Southhampton, England in 1944, Smith […]

The Haines Borough has hired new legal help. On the recommendation of manager Mark Earnest, the assembly voted 6-0 last month to dump the Anchorage firm of attorney Michael Gatti and hire Brooks Chandler of Boyd, Chandler and Falconer. Woman’s Club thanks town for help
I would like to thank the businesses and individuals of Haines that helped put on a most wonderful Woman’s Club convention. All the door prizes, goodies for the welcome bags, the wonderful meals and service and the library and museum for the place to hold our meetings were much appreciated. I do not want to forget […]

I recently spoke at a borough meeting about increased assessments placing an undue burden on taxpayers when mill rates are left the same. On December 7, 2009, the EPA issued its finding that the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change constitute a danger to public health. U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski introduced a resolution that would overturn the scientific determination that certain pollutants cause global warming and will have serious negative impacts on our health and environment. It […]

Tourism tax is ‘welfare’ for for-profits
Those who regard it as “welfare government” to give money to the many non-profit organizations in our community would do well to consider the tourism tax we all pay to support private, for-profit businesses. I know my share far exceeds the $46 per head for non-profits quoted in last week’s CVN. Mike Van Note
