After eight years of trying to score a Stump Company baseball cap, Garrett Montgomery finally got his wish on Saturday in the beer garden at the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Company owner Scott Rossman ran into Montgomery and, upon hearing the younger man’s years-long dream, Rossman lifted the greasy, sawdust-coated  hat from his own head and placed it on Montgomery’s. “I’ll never wear another hat,” Montgomery said.

And speaking of the fair, quilt maven Carol McConahay reports that the annual small quilt auction raised a whopping $3,147 with proceeds going to the Haines Girl Scout troop.

Chuck Jones and Brynn Murphy hosted a third annual celebratory costume brunch at their home at 38 Mile in honor of the visit of noted migratory residents Chloe Copeland and PhoebeSnow Desatoff. The theme was “50.” Copeland and Desatoff dressed like the 50th state of Hawaii in sarongs, bikinis and leis. Jones dressed as Saturday Night Live character Sally O’Malley, known for her red tracksuit and catch phrases beginning with “I’m 50.” Murphy’s costume was an homage to rapper 50 Cent. New to this year’s costume, croquet and champagne tradition was a water-balloon toss and guests Canyon Zeiders and Gina Bell, who dressed as characters from the 50s and the movie Grease.

The early-bird pot at the weekly bingo game at the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood hall in Haines made it up to $607 before Jewel Stevens finally nabbed it during Friday’s games. Stevens, a regular at the games, was playing eight or maybe nine cards for a chance to win it. It’s not her first time nabbing the coveted early-bird win, but Stevens  said it has been quite some time since she’s won. It’s a particularly opportune time, as her car just went into the shop and she wasn’t sure how she was going to pay for the repairs.
