Haines firefighters responded to an early morning call to a structure fire on Small Tracts Road on Monday.
Firefighters arrived at 1:09 a.m. to find an outbuilding on fire on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
In a media release, fire chief chief Zak Overmyer reported that firefighters were able to get water on the fire and stop it from spreading or completely burning down the structure.
“As a result, the contents of the shed, including a snowmachine, shop tools and other valuable property, were successfully saved with minimal damage,” according to the release. Twelve firefighters responded and had wrapped up and left the site by 1:37 a.m.
Overmyer said Tuesday afternoon that because of the minimal damage the department would not be calling in an external investigator, but it’s still not clear what sparked the fire. There was an extension cord running into the shed and he said it’s a good reminder to check combustibles or equipment keeping spaces warm, as well as electrical lines or extension cords.
He also said the icy driveway used to access the fire made the crew’s response more difficult, but the firetrucks are carrying sand currently to help out with the wintry weather conditions.
