Haines police detained a woman, but no charges have been filed after a Haines man was shot over the weekend and had to be medevaced out of town for medical treatment.
Sgt. Max Jusi said in an email Monday that he believes this was an isolated incident, that both parties knew each other and he does not believe there is an immediate threat to the public.
According to a police department media release, someone called local police Saturday afternoon saying they had just shot a man in the 300 block of Lutak Road. Officers responded, arrested a woman and gave first aid to a man with a gunshot wound.
They had some assistance from a visiting doctor, Takshanuk Mountain Trail owner Barbara Nettleton said. She was driving a shuttle for the Bald Eagle Festival-goers and made a sightseeing stop nearby, just after the shooting. One of her passengers, the doctor, saw the commotion and went over to help police until paramedics arrived.
In most cases, the Chilkat Valley News does not name alleged victims or perpetrators of crimes until the facts of the case are ruled on by a court.
In this case, as of Monday evening police have not charged anyone with a crime and they are withholding both parties’ identities. Jusi said there is no one currently in custody in connection with the shooting. The Chilkat Valley News has requested the legal justification of withholding the name of someone police have arrested.
