Although making a living in Haines has never been easy, today’s economic realities make starting a life in Haines increasingly problematic for young people. It is imperative we elect borough assembly members dedicated to addressing the issues that are most important to young Haines residents.
The “40 and Under Survey” conducted in February 2025 states the most-cited need for young residents is affordable housing, followed by better job opportunities, and child care. Borough assembly candidate Eben Sargent has already shown his commitment to creating affordable housing through his leadership role while serving on the planning commission. Both John Norton and Eben Sargent have pledged to prioritize issues important to young adults in Haines.
In the six years Gabe Thomas has been on the borough assembly, he has failed to address affordable housing and childcare and has no record of trying to create economic opportunities attractive to younger Haines residents. Clement’s one-year tenure shows no action taken regarding these important issues.
Haines should be proud of the successful, innovative businesses started by young, creative Haines residents such as Foundroot (seeds, locally sourced food/products), Fairweather Ski Works (locally made skis, snowboards), and Four Winds Farm (locally grown produce). We need forward-thinking assembly members to support and expand upon such business models.
If you care about the future of Haines, vote for the candidates who are willing to think outside the box, support our young residents, and attract newcomers. Vote for Sargent and Norton.
