In early August, while hiking the Battery Point trail on a beautiful summer day, things took a turn when my brother’s 14-year-old dog — who my partner and I were caring for — got a face full of porcupine quills.

A fellow hiker suggested we head to the Haines Animal Rescue Kennel (HARK), and I’m so thankful we did.

The staff at HARK were absolutely incredible. From the moment we arrived, Emily and Laura made us feel calm and supported, as though the situation could be handled together. Over the next hour, we worked with them to remove all the quills. Their composure, commitment, and compassion were remarkable.

What’s more, while a veterinary clinic likely would’ve charged a hefty fee, they helped us purely out of kindness — refusing payment (though we gratefully left HARK a donation). We were especially struck by Emily’s skill, bravery and calm presence, particularly for someone so young. Her care for the ol’ dog came first and it showed.

Haines is lucky to have people like Emily and Laura, and an organization like HARK. We left feeling deeply grateful — and reassured that there’s a lot of heart in this town.

Thank you, HARK!
