I am sadly not surprised at how politics can override common sense and decency.  The dispute over Takshanuk Watershed Council’s  (TWC) community composting facility is a blatant example.

After discussion of the planning process, space at the cemetery and the issue of respect, opponents admitted to the truth of the matter. They don’t agree with TWC’s values because TWC is a science-based environmental education non-profit.

All evidence points to TWC’s integrity, transparency, community-mindedness and continuous engagement with the borough, which has been supportive of TWC’s efforts to clarify and legally resolve the easement access issue. Regarding the claim that a composting facility would violate the sanctity of those buried and their families, where was that concern before TWC?

The cemetery is across from a large tour company, AMG, junk cars and stuff, and has been near a bus depot, access to an equipment repair shop, and is also en route to a popular hiking beach.

Jones Point Road has never been a quiet road.  I’m not dismissing the sanctity of our loved ones’ resting place but questioning the timing and intent of the opposition’s concern.

TWC has been a consistently positive influence in our community with children’s programs,
wildlife and habitat monitoring, research and more aimed at protecting resources that most of us, left, right, and center, love, use and depend on.

This organization deserves appreciation rather than mean-spirited political abuse. Please support TWC in its dedicated efforts to do the right thing for our community.
