The Haines Borough is large and under-resourced. This fact has a current assembly member wanting to liquidate the decommissioned Mosquito Lake School. This facility was deeded to the Haines Borough by the State of Alaska as a public asset.
Because the Haines Borough is large and under-resourced, a group of volunteers residing 30 miles from the townsite have volunteered for a decade to manage the facility on a day-to-day basis.
Thanks to the many people who have served on this board since its inception as the Friends of Mosquito Lake School & Community Center. That’s a mouthful. Now, the Four Winds Resource Center is a registered 501(c)3 with many regional partners.
This well-constructed and spacious facility continues to be integral to the community’s physical and social infrastructure. It serves as a resilience hub and emergency shelter and is well stocked with emergency supplies thanks to our partnership with Southeast Alaska Independent Living!
The FWRC board is actively committed to fostering community cohesion and resilience that addresses both immediate needs and long-term well-being to enhance overall community preparedness. It is a hub for information and resources, providing and connecting residents with relevant services and opportunities that might otherwise remain unavailable.
We organize community forums and public events to enable residents to voice their opinions and contribute to decision-making processes, especially facilitating communication and collaboration between residents and local governments. We invite the Haines Borough elected officials — and the entire community — to come to our events. #You Belong Here
