The parks and recreation work party made progress on the waterfront loop trail from Picture Point to the waterfront on Saturday. Volunteers included Kathleen Menke, Sue Libenson, Bill Holton, Susette Carroll, Rio Daimes, Aimee Creelman, Thom Ely, Matthew Craig, Debbie Gravel, Cindy Buxton, Russ White, Luke Tergis and Ada Tergis. They gathered to clear the trails on the property that Margaret Piggott  donated to the borough last year on the condition that it be turned into a park. Holly Davis also used the recently cleared area to lead a library trail adventure. The group brought rain gear and got the kids out on the brand new trail. Piggott, a hiking and writing legend, is credited with writing the first pamphlet for Haines tourism aimed at those who enjoyed hiking. She settled in Haines in 1969.

Diz Kistler helped his neighbor, Sarah Ammon,  learn the very important steps to harvesting firewood recently. The duo spotted a handsome spruce down in a convenient location, contacted the land owner and arranged to whisk it away. Ammon and Kistler could be spotted on a rainy morning bucking up the tree after a comprehensive safely talk and some chain saw maintenance. Ammons walked away with the beginning of her first firewood stash of the season.

The Chamber of Commerce Father’s Day car show featured over 20 cars and motorcycles for car enthusiasts to check out while they enjoyed grilled hotdogs served up by the Salvation Army, family photos and music. Clearwater Plumbing sponsored the event. Chuck Mitman was the lucky winner of a $100 gift card to Lutak Lumber. Chamber of Commerce director Amanda Brandon said the homemade horchata was a hot commodity. Tom Morphet  and Ron Smith had matching 1985 Toyota two-wheel-drive pickup trucks. One was in immaculate condition and the other was not, but we’ll let you guess who owned which.

Kathy Berzanske and Jan Hill had the chance to go on a “sisters get-a-way” to Haines Junction. They were attending the Da Kų Nän Ts’étthèt dance festival, along with the Chilkat Dancers. Berzanske said that she was very impressed with her accommodations at Kluane Cabins. She also pointed out that the outhouses available on site were the cleanest she has ever used.

The Da Kų Nän Ts’étthèt event offers dance performances by groups from across the north, and also has workshops, markets and feasts. The dance festival has been celebrating this tradition since 2013, when it started as the grand opening of the Da Kų Cultural Centre.
