Responding to assembly member Mark Smith’s letter about non-profits, I presume Dr. Smith considers himself one of the “higher density of extraordinary human beings” in Haines. As a retired medical doctor, presumably he has a higher density of discretionary funds to support the non-profits he aligns with. Since those who can afford it should give “10% of our good fortune to those in need,” I would like to ask Dr. Smith which entities he supports. He offers his personal time and expertise to help some of them, but what about money?  How much do you give to Becky’s Place and Salvation Army?  Is it 10%, or even 1%?

Some of the criticisms of non-profits are not based on facts. Haines Recycling is not a business, it is a service. Businesses are in it to make money and nobody intends to make money there. While KHNS produces local news and rebroadcasts other news, it is not a news agency. It is a public service essential for emergency broadcasting. SAIL is not an assisted living facility, but an organization helping anyone to live independently so they don’t need such a facility.

If Haines residents have such a “synergy leading to enhanced states of spiritual awareness,” why are we always in disagreement?  Why are we critical of one another or gossiping about others on Haines Chatters and condemning those who make mistakes? But he is right. Hard work has brought me good fortune in my lifetime, and I should donate more.
