
Stacee Powlison recently received disaster prep kits for the Four Winds Resource Center. She accepted 25 that will stay at the center and 14 will be distributed to locals.
The kits were put together by Southeast Alaska Independent Living and made possible with the help of the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation. SAIL will also be distributing kits as needed in town.
Oops, correction to last week. Megan Schwartz-Whitermore, Haines High School alumna, received a degree in elementary education with a minor in Asian studies. She graduated summa cum laude from Florida International University. She plans to possibly teach in Asia. She credits her mentors here in Haines, Lilly Boron, Kristin White and Sam McPhetres.
Ron and Cary Weishahn have been tracking the snowfall at 40 Mile Haines Highway for 45 years. Ron says that this year has come in at just under nine feet five inches of snow. The average year, according to their data, is 22 feet.
Longtime Haines residents Jim and Deb Stanford are celebrating 53 years together. They were married in Lake Havasu City, Arizona on March 21, 1972 only six weeks after meeting in college at Kent State. They raised three children here and now enjoy spending time with 11 grandchildren.
A fun Easter fact was shared by Annie Boyce this week. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox, which is fixed on March 21. That makes this a late Easter.
Some sure signs of spring are popping up in town. Rhubarb has been confirmed at Leslie Evenden’s yard as well as Zane Bradley’s garden. This hardy perennial is an excellent gauge to let us know that the public restrooms at Picture Point should be open to the public soon? Nope, that is not expected until May 1.
Scholarship season is open! The Uglys of Haines’ deadline for applications by mail or email is April 25, 2025. The Uglys gave $15,300 last year, bringing the total scholarships distributed to local grads and alumni to $120,250
The Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes is looking for memorial photos for a special service during its 90th tribal assembly in Juneau this year. Citizens can submit a photo, name of the tribal citizen, year of birth and death, and the community they lived in until March 28 at ccthita.org.
