A Haines-based reality show, “Gold Rush: White Water,” is done for the foreseeable future, according to an email sent to crew members.
Produced by Raw TV, the show filmed at mining sites throughout the Chilkat Range for nine seasons on Discovery Channel, first airing in 2018.
A ninth and final season was filmed last summer and is currently in post-production.
Line producer Jonathan Knapp wrote in the email that “for now the series is on indefinite pause,” though Knapp also wrote that Discovery Channel “may look at bringing the series back in some form in the longer term.”
Few details about the scale of the production were available. Knapp, Discovery Channel and Raw TV did not respond to requests seeking more information.
The Chilkat Valley News contacted cast and crew Saturday, but they said they could not speak about the cancellation because of non-disclosure agreements.
The cancellation will have broader economic ripples in the community: the show bought supplies from Olerud’s and Howser’s IGA. Staff also purchased fuel from Delta Western in Haines for each season of filming. More recently it contracted with helicopters to fly into the claims they explored on the show.
Doug Olerud of Alaska Sport Shop said he was notified last week that the show had been canceled.
“With the potential lack of Canadians coming down, and“Gold Rush” not being here, I think this is probably going to be a slower year than normal for us,” he said.
