Ken Gross was on a walk recently near the former Fort Seward parade grounds when he encountered a brown bear sow and a small cub. Gross said the cub headed into some nearby bushes and the sow came directly toward him. He decided that the best thing was to look like he wasn’t a threat to the cub, so he turned and walked away. But he misjudged a curb and he fell onto his knees. He said his hoodie came up over his head so he wasn’t able to see, but he heard the sow approach him grunting, clicking her teeth and breathing heavily. “I’m just waiting for the claws to come into my back or bite me,” he said. Instead she took off and went in another direction. Gross said he decided to walk down to the well-lit bathrooms at the cruise ship dock to avoid encountering the pair again when the sow popped out from another set of bushes. That’s when the terror sat in, Gross said. “I don’t know if she was stalking me, but I didn’t feel safe about going up the road with my back to her,” he said. He waited for some time and then walked to the bathrooms, but they were locked. Ultimately, he called 9-1-1 and they sent an officer, who said he could have called sooner.
