A caller reported a limping brown bear in the area. The bear is not doing anything.
Haines Volunteer Fire Department staff and borough police responded to the report of a death.
A caller requested a welfare check on her mother. The caller did not know where she lives and had not heard from her in three weeks. The caller was advised that police have had no contact with the mother. The caller stated she would seek other options to locate her.
A driver was ticketed for failure to provide proof of insurance.
An officer responded to a report of a light across the river at Mile 2 of the Haines Highway. The light was a steady white and not flashing. There were no signs of distress and the officer was unable to identify the source of the light.
Sept. 16
A caller advised that a bear tried to break in a door to their building on Main Street and ripped off the moulding but did not gain entry.
Sept. 17
A caller reported a parasailer on rough water who looked to be struggling in the Chilkat Inlet along Mud Bay Road. The caller watched them for a few minutes, then advised that they were upright and moving toward land and appeared okay. The caller stated they didn’t know parasailers went on water that rough. An officer checked out the situation and said the parasailer was upright and looked fine.
Sept. 18
An officer responded to an alarm at a local business on Main Street and found a door ajar.
Sept. 19
A caller advised that a brown bear dragging its back legs had laid down near Chilkoot Loop Road. The Alaska wildlife trooper was advised.
Sept. 20
A caller reported a bear in the woods with young people walking in the area. An officer responded and did not locate the bear.
A caller reported a blue-green truck that drove over a curb on Second Avenue and left the area speeding. An officer responded and did not locate the vehicle.
Sept. 21
A caller requested assistance with getting a ride after their tent collapsed in the rain and they had poor cell reception at Mile 8 of the Haines Highway. A friend was advised and stated he would go get them.
Caller reported trespassers on their property around 2 a.m. on the Haines Highway.
A caller reported an injured brown bear heading toward a home on the beach along Mud Bay Road. A second caller reported that the bear was headed toward a beach where dogs are often walked. A third caller reported the bear on the beach. An officer responded and observed the bear. The bear was injured a week or two prior during a fight with another bear on the beach and has been hanging out in this area. The bear was observed to be feeding along the river and not causing any damages. Alaska wildlife troopers and the state’s bear biologist were appraised of the bear and its activities.
Caller reported trespassers still on their property around 7:30 a.m. on the Haines Highway. An officer responded but did not locate any trespassers.
A caller reported a red carryall vehicle parked at the skate park on Sawmill Road for more than a week. An officer responded.
An officer checked the trails at Jones Point for an injured bear.
A caller reported an injured bear in his yard, thrashing around along Small Tracts Road. While the caller was on the phone, the bear headed back into the woods towards Mud Bay Road. The caller was advised to leave the bear alone and call back if it was damaging property or if people were seen walking in the area.
An officer checked on the injured bear on Mud Bay Road.
A caller advised that a bear with barbed wire or a snare wrapped around its neck in the parking lot along 14 Mile of the Haines Highway. The caller was concerned for its welfare. Alaska State Troopers were advised and they said they’d call the wildlife trooper.
A caller reported trespassers on the property around 1:45 p.m. along the Haines Highway. An officer responded but did not locate the trespassers.
A caller reported a bear with a cable wrapped around its neck near 11 Mile of the Haines Highway.
There were two 9-11 hang-up calls, two canine calls, eight EMS calls and 16 burn permits issued.
