Aimee Jacobson’s last day at the Haines Post Office was July 10. In 2015, Jacobson started her U.S.Postal Service career here in Haines and now she’s the Yakutat Postmaster. Jacobson is originally from the Upper Peninsula area in Michigan. She took a roadtrip to Alaska at 18 years old and never looked back. Jacobson has lived in Haines for 30 years with her husband. Together they raised two children at their Mosquito Lake home. Now, 22-year-old Odin is serving in the United States Army while his 18-year-old younger brother Phoenix attends school at University of Alaska Anchorage. Jacobson said she will miss seeing the people in Haines every day, the history, and the friendships she made.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation will have an open house on Saturday, August 10 from 4-7 p.m.. The ABEF interns will present their summer research projects to the community.

Christy Tengs Fowler, Toni DeWitt, Nancy Coleman, Patricia Peters, Judy Heinmiller and Connie Ward organized a combined 1973-74 high school reunion last weekend. The group of about 40 started out with a seafood dinner out at Letnikof Cove, it included freshly caught and cooked Dungeness crab provided by Stewart Dewitt, and fresh sockeye from Charles DeWitt. They also went to the Pioneer Bar for a trivia night and held a dance at the American Legion Hall. “Some people hadn’t seen each other for 50 years,” said Toni DeWitt. She said of the 60 or so students between the two classes, about 25 of them still live in town – though they don’t always see each other. “It was fun to get together and reminisce.”

Three of the classes’ teachers also attended, Dave Olerud, Terry Sharmbroich and Barbara Pardee.

Former Haines school math teacher Kerry McIver was in town recently. She stayed with Lori Carter. Her highlights included: going four-wheeling up flower mountain with Joe Parnell, Hiking up the Mount Ripinsky race trail and finding a “ton of blueberries.”  Lots of Lifetime movie nights at Karen Garcia and Russ Bell’s house. Lowlights included: the really bad weather because there wasn’t a lot to do outside as well as getting her four-wheeler stuck in the snow and then also losing Joe on the mountain and going back almost to the top again because she thought he fell off. Not being able to find anywhere to eat. She also liked visiting with Leigh Horner for a short time and Tom Morphet. She bought a van from Parnell and drove to Healy when she left the community.
