Sidney Campbell, education and outreach coordinator at the American Bald Eagle Foundation, was featured on Wild Alaska Live on the BBC July 26. She spent two days in Juneau rehearsing and filming to talk about eagles and their natural history for the second episode of the three-episode series. The show focused on Alaskan wildlife like salmon, bears and wolves. Sidney said the first episode, aired live on the channel BBC One, had 5.5 million viewers in the United Kingdom. While filming, she met Chris and Martin Kratt, hosts of popular children’s wildlife shows “Wild Kratts” and “Zoboomafoo.”
Former residents Coleus and Scot Nichols from Bellingham, Wa. visited family and friends in Haines during July. Their children, Finn, 5, and River, 1, enjoyed spending time with cousin Willow Bryant. Scot hosted an embodied mindfulness workshop in early July at a Mud Bay Road yoga studio. He said he’ll be making the event annual, with plans to return next summer.
Margaret Piggott had an 85.5 birthday celebration July 25 on the Beach Road waterfront. Brother Michael Piggott and wife Norma came from Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, and niece Diana Piggott-Hicks and Bart Hicks from came from Calgary, Alberta. Marty Osredker and Roz Goodman from Pedro Bay rode down from Anchorage. Don Murphy and Joan Turner from Whitehorse, Ric Iannolino from Juneau, and friends from Haines also had a good time. Margaret said she received birthday cards cut in half for her half birthday.
Leslie Ross’s mother, Margie Ross, was in town celebrating granddaughter Rio Ross-Hirsh’s 11th birthday. Rio had a dance-themed birthday party in July with friends at the Chilkat Center.
Ben Bard just returned from the Tlingit Celebration Haa Kusteeyi of 2017 in Teslin, YT July 27-30 where he and James Hart and Ray Dennis participated in events including a 12-man canoe race around bouys to the finish line. Ben danced with Tlingit dancers, served food at several dinners and learned about Tlingit culture.
Joan Snyder hosted Alice Cyr from Whitehorse, YT this week before Alice left on a tour of the state. Joan also hosted Cornelia Devlin, of Clinton, WA, formerly of Yakutat. While here, Joan, Alice and Cornelia enjoyed the Southeast Alaska State Fair and each other’s company. Joan said the trio “reminisced” on old memories.
Lucy Harrell celebrated her 93rd birthday on Aug.1 with friends at Haines Assisted Living. Lucy had a black forest cake and that evening went out to Chilkoot Lake and saw bears.
Finley and Ruby Edwards are back from Greenville, MS for another summer stay at the Gregg Condo. They visit every other year and are here to enjoy Haines and see their friends while they visit.
Byrne Power recently received 150 copies of his first self-published book titled “Three Motions.” Byrne said on his Facebook page that “motions” is the old English word for puppets and puppet plays. The 50-page book contains “three strange little plays” called “Everypuppet,” “21st Century Faust” and “The Definition of ‘Fun.’” Contact Byrne to purchase a copy. Byrne is also working to crowdfund a documentary called “Gravity From Above,” the first full documentary exploration of European puppetry. The movie is two-thirds finished, and Byrne is raising money on Indiegogo to complete the project.
