Roy Augustus Knight was born at 8:40 p.m. on Nov. 1 to Kendra and Alex Knight in Juneau. He weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces and was 21 inches long. Kendra’s mother Frankie Jones was in the room during delivery and Roy now joins big brother Evan.

The Haines Dolphins sent 14 swimmers to Whitehorse last weekend for the Ryan Downing Memorial Swim Meet, along with coaches Jackie St. Clair and Sarah Elliott. Among the swimmers were Lucia and Sally ChapellWinter CheneyCaedmon Del PreteCaroline ElliottMakayla HenryPatience NelsonPacific RickeLillian and McConnell RobinsonCorwin Sundberg and Anica and Emery Tipkemper. This was the first away meet for several younger swimmers. Emery Tipkemper, and Garrison Del Prete won the 50-meter freestyle race for their age groups and received special awards.

Jessica EdwardsAndy Hedden, and daughter Sophia met up with Jessica’s brother Sam Edwards and his wife Lindsey Moore in London over Lindsey’s fall break from the Anglo-American School in Sofia, Bulgaria, where she is an elementary counselor. They were also joined by Jessica’s sister, also a former Haines resident, Helen Edwards, who just finished her master’s degree in Wales, and Lindsey’s brother Devin Moore. The family spent three days riding subways and double decker buses to the British and Natural History museums, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and other landmarks. Afterward, they hopped a flight to Florence, Italy, and stayed in a restored Tuscan cottage and visited the birthplace of renaissance art and architecture. Highlights were walking around The Duomo, climbing the tower at the Medici Palace, eating gelato every day, and quiet walks in the Tuscan hills. “We took a train for a day of sightseeing in Rome, and then flew to Sofia, Bulgaria. Sophia made lots of new friends attending second grade at Lindsey’s school, and we explored the interesting mix of medieval Bulgarian, Ottoman, and Soviet history and architecture in Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo, and enjoyed hiking in Bulgaria’s beautiful countryside,” Jessica said.

Keri Eggleston just returned from San Diego where she completed a two-day enameling workshop with instructor Richard Schneider of the San Diego Enamel Guild. After the workshop she was joined by her friend and former Haines resident Robyn Barlow of Chico, Calif. The two friends enjoyed an action-filled weekend exploring the city. Highlights included biking on Coronado Island, cruising around the city on electric scooters, happening upon a Day of the Dead festival in Old Town, accidentally sitting on a cactus in Balboa Park, and getting the dance party started at a bar in their host neighborhood.

Carol TuynmanSue Waterhouse, and Debra Schnabel took the ferry to Juneau to attend the Princess Sophia Opera which was put on by Juneau’s Orpheus Project. On the way, they were able to visit the wheelhouse as they passed the Vanderbilt Reef where the Princess Sophia sank 100 years ago.

Last week’s annual Friends of the National Rifle Association banquet proved to be the best one yet. George CampbellGabe ThomasCheryl Stickler, and Kit Brown organized the event. This was George’s first banquet at as the chair of the Haines branch of the Friends of the NRA, “Half of the funds go to National Shooting ranges that benefit shooting ranges, like ours benefited a few years ago. The other half go to local and statewide grant programs for which clubs can apply like our own, Haines Gals Shooting Club and Haines Hot Shots,” Campbell said. Local businesses also donated auction items for people to bid on.
