Elias Bruce Baylous was born in Juneau to Amy and Gabriel Baylous on March 22 at 7:45 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds and 9 ounces and was 21.5 inches long. “We are so in love. Big sister Adalina has welcomed her little brother with lots of hugs and kisses,” said Amy.
Stacie and Donnie Turner celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in Oahu. They spent four days in Kona and six days in Waikiki. They were joined by their daughter Shelly Turner and her boyfriend John Venables. Highlights included a surprise helicopter tour of the island, visiting Pearl Harbor and the Honolulu Zoo, and the Honolulu Festival with a huge fireworks display over Waikiki beach. “It was so fun and exciting to see the volcanoes and waterfalls and Pearl Harbor was something I always wanted to see. That was very touching and interesting to see,” said Stacie.
Marirose Evenden and Dylan Chapell have returned from Bend, Ore. where they skied until their hearts were content on Mt. Bachelor for a week. Marirose visited with her father Doug Evenden and also with former residents Michael Ahmuty, daughters Riley and Cassidy, and Travis Reid and family.
Liam Cassidy and Tracey Wirak spent two months in Kenya, Africa. Shannon Higgins picked them up at the airport in Nairobi and took them to the Teule Children’s Home in Loitokitok. They spent five weeks volunteering there and at Kibo Slopes Academy. Following the volunteer work, they spent three weeks traveling around Kenya. “We went to the Rift Valley and spent time on the Indian Ocean along Kenya’s southern coastline. It was an amazing experience and we will be giving a slideshow and hosting a fundraiser in the near future,” Tracey said.
Chevy Fowler and girlfriend Catherine Sample along with Chevy’s mom Christy and brother Marty have returned from a trip to California where they attended two Golden State Warriors basketball games and visited friends and family. “My mother and I have been Warriors fans for years. I first got her hooked on them when we were in high school and it started as just a way for us to bond over something and then she became almost a bigger fan than me,” said Chevy. Highlights of the trip included visiting Pier 39, a bus tour around the city, China Town, a visit with Haines resident Larry Harris in Berkley, and electric scooter rides around the shore. The trio met up with Chevy’s aunt Carrie Nickols and enjoyed lunch with David Wulzen and Monica Galarneau who are working on the documentary “Above the Bamboo Room.” Before the end of their trip they attended a second Warriors game, this time against the Phoenix Suns. Chevy shook player Quinn Cook’s hand and got photos on the court. “The players were so close and so much bigger in person. The crowd was so loud and had so much energy. Both teams played so well and despite the Warriors loss it was by far the greatest day of my life so far,” added Chevy. After the game, they ran into Jamal Crawford, and had photos taken with him which added to their day and amazing trip.
Matt Blood, Haines High School class of 2003 completed his second 100-mile foot race this past weekend. The 10th Annual White Mountains 100-mile ultra race took place just north of Fairbanks with only 14 runners in the group of 82 finishing participants. Other competitors raced on skis and fat bikes. “Matt placed third (in the group of runners) with a time of 27:34. He ran from 8 a.m. Sunday all day and through the night, finally finishing at 11:34 a.m. Monday. The weather varied from warm and sunny to freezing rain and blowing snow,” said Matt’s mom Barb Blood. His first 100 mile race was held near Sacramento, Calif. in November with a finishing time of 27:14. He placed 115th out of 251 runners.
Ramie Carlson and her daughter Piper have returned from a trip to Cave Creek, Ariz. to visit her parents Patti and Rich Carlson. Highlights included visiting the OdySea Aquarium, lounging by the pool, hiking in Sedona and Piper also went on a pony ride.
