Dear Editor,
Regarding your April 6 editorial: “Really really really wanna Zigazig ah!,” apparently “half the town” is in an uproar over the Fairground’s intent to sponsor a Drag Show. Why? You suggested that we should laugh it off and focus on more important things, but contrary to your perspective this is not a minor issue. This format requires brevity, so here it is: “The woman shall not wear that which pertainteth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God” – Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV.
You don’t have to hold my beliefs to understand that they are mine, and as an American I have an inalienable right to them, but the fact that the fairgrounds is a public-sponsored event supported by my property-tax dollars means that I am forced to support that which is a clear abomination unto our Creator. I am “really really really” not interest in making God that mad.
So now legally we are left with a few choices as a society: the Fair can choose a form of entertainment that we can all publicly accept as at least not abominable to the God of our Nation’s Declaration, or: they can forego their tax exempt status and public funding, and separate themselves from claiming public representation by eliminating the title “Southeast Alaska State Fair,” or “half the town” may stop paying property tax on religious grounds. It’s THAT serious.
