The Beach Rose
Tawny Darling and Robert Chadwell opened The Beach Rose last week—a shop offering everything from jewelry, paintings and wood-burned ornaments to jams, jellies and spice mixes.
Darling and Chadwell have for the last several years been selling such items at local farmers markets and poke at the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Darling, a painter, will also sell her work.
Their shop is in a choice spot directly across from the cruise ship dock where they’re focused on selling local products to not only residents, but tourists who might be tired of mass-produced souvenirs.
“It’s not just for cruise ship passengers. It’s for everybody,” Chadwell said. “We want to entice locals to show up as much as possible. We’re trying to focus on local art and local products as much as we can.” Chadwell said.
They opened on Thursday, May 12 when the first large cruise ship docked in Haines for the summer and said they were pleasantly surprised by the customer traffic.
“There was quite a bit,” Darling said. “We didn’t know what to expect. It seemed like a lot of the customers were really happy to be visiting Haines.”
The Beach Rose is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will have extended hours during cruise ship days. For more information call 766-3955.
Local fish featured at food truck
Tracey Harmon’s new food truck “The Frog Lady Fish Company” specializes in locally caught seafood including fish and chips and fish tacos with ingredients harvested from Lynn Canal.
“I like that idea of farm to table, selling your fresh local cuisine, what’s in your backyard,” Harmon said of her new business venture that’s located next to the post office. “All of our fish is from Haines Packing Company.”
Her menu includes panko-battered sockeye and shrimp, beer-battered halibut and a halibut sandwich, and fish tacos. She’ll also serve specials on the weekends at a menu more catered toward locals including chicken wings and loaded fries. Sides include seasoned fries and coleslaw.
The food truck, which formerly was home to “Taco Delights” in Skagway, will be open Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m.
Harmon said she wanted to keep her menu simple and hours consistent, but might open additional hours depending on how the summer progresses.
“I intend on keeping this schedule all season, and if anything, I’ll add more onto it,” Harmon said.
