Two of the nine US Volunteer Agencies involved with resettling people from war-torn parts of the world have responded thus far with a desire to partner with a local non-profit to host a family of refugees. I have been working mainly with the United States Committee on Refugees and Immigrants, and expect to receive a questionnaire from the other respondent, the Episcopal Migration Ministries
To spread the word and solicit interest I have contacted several members of the Haines Ministerial Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the local veteran’s group, the Mayor, SEARHC, the school Superintendent, the Haines Community Foundation among others. Additionally I have heard from a number of retired teachers offering their services.
The USCRI places federally vetted refugees throughout the nation. Their criteria for resettling refugees include adequate housing, convenient transportation, medical services, language assistance if needed, and the potential for local employment. This is monitored by a state-wide office, subcontracted to Catholic Social Services in Anchorage.
So any non-profit organization that would be interested in getting involved as a local sponsor of a refugee family, or would like further information, please let me know or contact USCRI directly at [email protected].
