Concerning the recent termination of the potentially dangerous bear by Haines Police chief, it’s a tempest in a teapot if ever there was one. The chief did as well as could be expected for someone not specifically trained in such matters. Perhaps Alaska Department of Fish and Game or the Troopers would rather be bothered by every bear call that crosses dispatch’s desk? History proves otherwise. As a retired Fish & Wildlife Trooper who has responded to many similar calls, I categorically support his actions. Stuff happens, bears are not endangered and there are currently many more pressing matters one can get his dander up about. By the way, give the Anchorage Fish and Wildlife office a call and see if they tell you how many bears they have killed in the Anchorage Bowl area this year, you may be shocked.
