Dr. Kirk Mosley is the new dentist at SEARHC dental clinic. Kirk retired from a private practice in Tucson, Ariz. after 25 years there. Since 2012, he has practiced humanitarian dentistry in China, Tonga, Puerto Rico, Belize and Costa Rica. He’s a runner, hiker and skier with five children and 20 grandchildren living in five states. Wife Karen Mosley is in Tucson for now. Dr. Kirk recently worked in Kotzebue.
Animal curator Sidney Campbell and intern Meadow Arbogast of the American Bald Eagle Foundation made a recent trip to Skagway with Ole, a peregrine falcon. They made presentations about falcons, raptors and bird protection at the Skagway School and at the Moore homestead cabin. In other ABEF news, Ali Gustafson has been hired as program coordinator. Her duties will include daily bird care and husbandry under supervisor Josh Sanko. Gustafson served as a foundation intern in 2019.
Sollie Joy Kelly was born Aug. 13 to Courtney and Rob Kelly. Sollie Joy weighed 7 lbs., 14 oz., and measured 21 inches. She was born at home at 26 Mile with Rob handling the delivery. Rob’s mom Marilyn Kelly of East Liverpool, Ohio came to town for the birth. Sollie Joy joins siblings Elias, Addison, Auden, Arden, Josiah, Courage, Hadassah and Remeny.
Kevin and Chris Reeves say they’re well and working as artists in Valdez. After 26 years in Haines, the couple pulled up stakes four years ago for Seward then tried out the Mat-Su region before landing in the Prince William Sound town. Kevin paints portraits of fishing boats and Chris crafts custom cards. They are members of the town’s artist co-op. Daughter Hannah Reeves is engaged to be married in two weeks in Snowmass, Colo. Daughter Megan Reeves and son Logan are in Idyllwild, Calif., where Megan works in respite care. Kevin notes that former Haines resident Julie Turnbull works at the Valdez post office. Mayor Doug Olerud presented lifeguard Kaitlyn Tolin with the Haines Life Saver Award at Tuesday’s assembly meeting. Tolin rescued Los Angeles surfer Adam de Boer, who was going down in a Turnagain Arm bore tide current on July 24. The award prize was a bouquet of flowers and a pack of Life Savers candy. Sponsored by Haines Friends of the Pool, the award has previously gone to residents Jesse McGraw, Nik Mackowiak, Shelly Sloper and Luck Dunbar.
Cathy Pashigian spent a month on East Coast beaches in July, starting in Virginia Beach and nearby Sandbridge Beach. Traveling north by Amtrak, she caught a performance of the “Book of Esther” by Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, Pa., which she said was comparable to a Broadway show in quality. Stops in her home state of Massachusetts included Revere, Beverly and Seabrook beaches. Cathy is substitute teaching in Juneau. She was in town last weekend visiting friend Fuzzy von Stauffenberg.
Don Henagan enjoyed five weeks visiting friends here, including golfing, fishing at Chilkat Lake and adventuring up Flower Mountain to take in the views. He hosted his annual Mardi Gras celebration, the 27th in 28 years of Haines visits. (Last year’s was canceled due to COVID-19). Don is a real estate broker in Baton Rouge, La. He says thanks to Haines for its hospitality.
New pool manager Jae McDermaid needs more lifeguards to work at the pool. A three-day lifeguard training course will be held starting 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 24. Mari Dawn Baarson was born July 23 to Brianna and Matt Baarson. Mari weighed 8 lbs., 9 oz., and measured 20.5 inches. She joins big brothers Arlo and Bodie. The family recently moved to Boise, Idaho. Brianna is home with her children and photographing weddings. Matt is chief financial officer for Tresidio, a home-building company.
Manny Hansen has completed five of 10 weeks of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., including drills in 115-degree heat. Mom Valina Hansen said Manny, 19, scored 571 of 600 in his Army Combat Fitness test. Manny enlisted in the Army National Guard and hopes to pursue aviation mechanics training.
The Rainforest Islander, a landing-craft car ferry built for Lynn Canal by the late Bruce Gilbert of Haines, is for sale again. Owner Eric Yancey of Wrangell operated the 65-foot craft for 14 months between Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau and Ketchikan as part of a business called Breakaway Ferry and Freight. It was busy during breakdowns in state ferry service. Launched as the Silver Eagle, the vessel sailed recently as part of the failed North End Ferry Authority between Coffman Cove, Wrangell and Petersburg.
