The Haines Glacier Bears cheer and dance teams won the 2A region V tournament in Ketchikan last month.

Head coach Natalie Benassi said the squad was judged on cheerleading fundamentals including motion, jump, tumbling techniques, sideline cheers and dances and attentiveness to the game.

“We are also required to perform a two-minute halftime routine,”

Benassi said. “In the past, we would be adjudicated during a live game but this year it was a virtual competition.  We had two specific cheers and a situational cheer along with the halftime routine.”

In situational cheers, the team is given a scenario the day of the competition and must form a cheer based on the specifics. This year, they had to cheer as if their team was down by three points in the fourth quarter during a 30-second timeout.

The Glacier Bears competed against Wrangell and Metlakatla this year. Petersburg and Craig did not compete.

Senior Yzella Miramontes and junior Taylor Ganey were selected for the all-tournament team.
